Mums are the quintessential Fall flower. They spring up this time of year in a wide range of colors from bright yellows, creamy whites, warm oranges, and soft lavenders. Their tight compact bloom cover make them ideal for every Fall landscape and are especially suited to container gardens. They easily pop into clay pots and window boxes, whether they stand alone or provide the focal point of the container.
Hundreds of colors are available and often vary in bloom time. Unlike some plants, mums have a large number of blooms that last weeks and not days. Their longevity keeps the garden full of color too. To keep the garden full of color throughout the Autumn months opt for plants based on when they bloom. Plant a few that offer color early in the Fall and others that will bloom a little later. This trick will have your garden brimming with cheerful notes for the season. Most mums will with stand a light frost, but once winter sets in say good-bye to the gorgeous color. If you are lucky to live in a moderate climate you will find the blooms will last close to Christmas.
The sheer number of colors available can be incredibly overwhelming. Narrow the options down by selecting colors that coordinate with existing colors in the garden or complement the exterior color of the house. For a truly Autumn inspired palette choose burnt oranges, creamy whites and rusted reds.
I love gracing our front step with mums this time of year. They offer a burst of color creating a welcoming entry way. I am patiently waiting for these to bloom….. the buds are just starting to pop.
